The Philippines has the world's 9th largest population of Tuberculosis patients, and Asia's 3rd largest. The National Tuberculosis Program (NTP) reported 130,000 to 140,000 TB cases, mainly discovered and treated in government health units, of which 60% are highly infectious smear-positive cases. The Philippines currently has 250,000 cases of Tuberculosis, as of the year 2009.

Of the approximately 200 countries in the whole world today, only 22 countries are still left battling tuberculosis (TB), the infectious disease caused by the pathogenic bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Among these 22 countries still infected with TB, the Philippines now ranks ninth, an improvement to its former rank at seventh in the past years. This translates to approximately 250,000 Filipinos being infected annually and with around 75 patients dying everyday from the disease. The current statistics, although an improvement from those recorded in the past years, are still quite alarming, said Philippine Coalition Against Tuberculosis (PhilCAT) Board of Director Dr. Jose Hesron D. Morfe. “In the past, two out of every three Filipinos would have TB in their lifetime but because of the campaign to fight the disease, we were able to bring it down by 40 percent,†Morfe said during the 2009 World TB Day Commemoration event. To date, TB remains as the sixth leading disease-related cause of mortality in the Philippines. To curb this health crisis, the government, together with public and private companies and organizations, have come up with various educational and health programs to stop the spread of the disease, especially the dreaded multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB). With regards to the latter, the Philippines ranks 8th among 27 priority countries worldwide with the highest number of MDR-TB cases. Following would be a statistical profile of the latest TB indicators on the Philippines: Global Targets for TB Control Case Detection Rate: 70% Treatment Success Rate: 85% Millennium Development Goals (MDG): to reverse TB incidence and to reduce the prevalence of and deaths due to TB by 50% by 2015.
