There was no treatment for them. The drugs we have now were not around then and if they were, nothing was done for the soldiers.
2 :
check these links : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_war http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Civil_War
3 :
TB is spread through the air by means of "droplets" it is common in close living condidions because respiratory infections spread so easily... someone sneezes or coughs and the droplets fly in to the air and are inhaled by someone else. Imagine how closely the soldiers traveled, slept, ate, etc. There is still no cure for TB today and it is still transmitted the same way in underdeveloped countries. There was no treatment for TB during the Civil War, which is why it killed so many people. Try this link

Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis*. The bacteria usually attack the lungs. But, TB bacteria can attack any part of the body such as the kidney, spine, and brain. If not treated properly, TB disease can be fatal. TB disease was once the leading cause of death in the United States. TB is spread through the air from one person to another. The bacteria are put into the air when a person with active TB disease of the lungs or throat coughs, sneezes, speaks, or sings. People nearby may breathe in these bacteria and become infected. However, not everyone infected with TB bacteria becomes sick. People who are infected but not sick have what is called latent TB infection. People who have latent TB infection do not feel sick, do not have any symptoms, and cannot spread TB to others. But, some people with latent TB infection go on to get TB disease. People with active TB disease can be treated if they seek medical help. Most people with latent TB infection can take medicine so that they will not develop active TB disease.http://www.cdc.gov/TB/faqs/qa_introduction.htm

Can you get fired for having Tuberculosis

Can you get fired for having Tuberculosis?
Just had our TB skin test, mine came up negative but unfortunately my co-worker's came back positive. Can she lose her job for that?

No, but she might be placed on a temporary leave of absence while she undergoes treatment. The treatment is very simple. Her family may have to be treated as well. My sister contracted it while working at a doctor's office and I think they put her out of work for about a week after a positive test while she took the meds.
2 :
I wouldn't think so. That would be discrimination. You can get treatment for it, so that is probably what they will end up doing.
3 :
No. A positive TB skin test does not mean you have an active TB infection, but that you have been exposed to it and carry the bacteria. There are also situations that can cause a false-positive result. TB cannot be spread if you do not have an active infection. After a positive test, usually a chest x-ray is taken, a sputum (mucus coughed up from the lungs) test is done. If it is determined that there is no live infection, the person may be given INH, and antibiotic that, if taken for several months, can stop the bacteria from turning into a live infection. If no other action is taken at your workplace, then she needs to contact her doctor

Tuberculosis is transmitted through any media

Tuberculosis is transmitted through any media?
And on average how long the symptoms arise after people are exposed to TB germs?

In general is through the spark that came out of sputum when coughing patient (some experts say that saliva can also be a media broker), can also through dust, cutlery / drink that contains TB germs. Germs that enter the body will proliferate, the length of the accumulation of disease germs until the onset of symptoms can be many months until the annual

Can you get a ppd (tuberculosis test) when pregnant

Can you get a ppd (tuberculosis test) when pregnant?
I work in a hospital and I am required to get a ppd test. However, I am 6 months pregnant. Is this safe?

1 :
You can have the PPD test, you just can't take the meds if your positive until AFTER you deliver. ETA ~ Its not recommended that you take the PPD in the 1st trimester...but your in your 2nd so your fine.
2 :
Yep you can, but if you're still not comfortable, then they cannot make you take the test until you deliver :) (I work in a hospital too and have 2 months to go before I can get mine) ...
3 :
I got a test done and it was just this band they put around my leg to check the flow. If it's the same one, it won't do any harm at all. I'm sure the hospital wouldn't do anything to harm you or your baby.

Is it true that hepatitis, tuberculosis and AIDS can be spread in this way

Is it true that hepatitis, tuberculosis and AIDS can be spread in this way?
Can someone get infected these types of disease if he/she eats foods (from restaurants or cafes) like salad, fresh fruits or fruit juices or sweet dishes where heat is not involved. Recently I got an e-mail saying that a boy got infected with AIDS after eating pipeapple which he bought on his way home from a vendor (the vendor is an AID patient and he had a cut on his finger while cutting the pineapple and his blood spread into the fruit)

Hepatitis and tuberculosis - yes. But in the modern day there is a cure for both. Sure they are nasty, but I wouldn't lose my sleep over it. AIDS - highly unlikely. if that guy had a cut on his hand, and spread some fresh blood on the fruit, and the boy had a cut in his mouth and ate the fruit immediately, then maaaaybe. But that's such an unlikely chain of events. In the same way, a brick might separate itself from the wall of a building, fall and hit us on the head. But they usually don't. This story is made up. Think of it this way: doctors usually live into old age. They are in contact with patients all the time. What are their odds and what are yours.
2 :
no blood dies as soon as its air born unless he cut his finger off its fine if you didnt see blood all over it its good and if it was covered in blood why would it be eaten?
3 :
yes in any way if blood transfer takes place .
4 :
that is just silly. you catch hiv from blood to blood infection . the only way this could happen is if there was a massive amount of blood and the boy had a wound in his mouth
5 :
http://www.snopes.com/horrors/food/pineapple.asp This story is false.
6 :
To the best of my knowledge, the AIDS virus dies with 5 minutes with out a human host, so I believe this to be false. Hepatitis A is spread airborne so this might be true, but only from type A, although there are numerous types of it. And TB is spread by contact of the person.
7 :
TB is an airborne disease. Hepatitis B & C spread through blood, not food (Hep. A spread through fecal - oral way). AIDS spread through body fluid, but HIV die at uncondusive situation within 30 sec to 5 minutes. Pineapple is one of those not condusive situation, because it's acid condition. It's a junk email.
8 :
all i can add is snowflak and jo were both right that e-mail was a junk.....not a possible means of communicating the disease
